NDC Introduces Tough Anti-Defection Policy for Candidates
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled a new policy aimed at discouraging political defections and protecting the party’s electoral mandates.
Under the new arrangement, all NDC candidates seeking elective offices will be required to sign a legally binding agreement and affidavit committing to vacate their seats if they defect from the party after winning an election.
The party presented the policy documents to its members and members of the press at its National Secretariat in Abuja.
Speaking on the development, NDC National Chairman Moses Cleopas said the policy is designed to strengthen internal party discipline, promote loyalty, and ensure that electoral victories secured under the party’s platform remain with the party.
The move comes amid growing concerns over the frequent defection of elected officials from one political party to another after elections, a practice many Nigerians believe undermines the will of the voters.
Supporters of the policy argue that voters elect candidates based on the political platform they represent, while critics may question whether such agreements can withstand legal challenges.
