Biya Appoints Son As Vice President

At 93 years old, President Paul Biya who has ruled Cameroon since 1982 has just appointed his son, Franck Emmanuel Biya, as Vice President, Head of the Armed Forces, and Minister in charge of Defence.

The announcement came on April 4, 2026, after parliament quickly passed a constitutional amendment to bring back the Vice President post that was scrapped decades ago.

Under the new rules, the Vice President will automatically take over and finish the remaining 7-year term if anything happens to the president.

Supporters say this is a smart move for stability amid security challenges. Critics are calling it a clear dynastic power grab.
