Okpebholo Turns Edo State To A Construction Site

Barely 14 months into the first tenure of Governor Monday Okpebholo-led administration; over 400km of Edo roads are rapidly wearing a new look as maximum attention is being given by the State Government. These roads are spread across the three Senatorial Districts in Edo State. It’s on record that some of these roads were abandoned projects taken over by Governor Okpebholo, which no other Governor would do; but we have a man that will go the extra mile to put smiles on the faces of Edo People.

Road as an infrastructure, is one key element for any meaningful development, because it brings connectivity among places and people, which in turn enhances economy and social cultural wellbeing of any society. This we saw in the administration of the Executive Governor of the defunct Bendel State, Late Prof Ambrose Folorunsho Alli(1979 – 1983). Prof Alli was greatly criticised for creating an access road network across the State: now Edo – Delta. The same scenario is playing out even in Senator Monday Okpebholo’s administration; but nevertheless, he isn’t distracted by his false accusers, for he already knows that a tree with sweet and ripe fruits will certainly attract stones.

In a bid to ensure that the Ministry of Works which is saddled with the primary responsibility of building roads gets proper stewardship; the Governor brought in a trained accountant, a business developer and a seasoned grassroot politician to head the Ministry. He is Hon.(Dr.) Felix Ehiguese Akhabue jp, the honourable Commissioner for Works in the State.
The honourable Commissioner for Works has been given a marching order to ensure that his Ministry carries out a zero-compromise supervision on all road projects in the State. This has been his focus since his assumption of office last October 2025.

Earlier this week, the State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo, called an elaborate meeting of stakeholders on road projects at the Government House where he reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to quality, speed and accountability in the execution of infrastructure projects in the State. The meeting had in attendance some key dignitaries like; Engr. Mrs Phoebe-William Bello, SA to the Governor on Projects Implementation and Monitoring; Edo State Speaker, the Rt Hon Blessing Agbebaku; APC State Vice Chairman, Hon Sylvester Aigboboh; the Edo Central APC leader, Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe Rtd; the Honourable Commissioner for Works, Hon.(Dr.) Felix Ehiguese Akhabue JP, and the Permanent Secretary for Works, Engr.(Dr.) John Obanor.

Hon. Akhabue in a speech, thanked the Governor for his proactiveness in conveying such a meeting, which he described as a good step in the right direction engaging the contractors, and this should fast track project delivery especially this dry season.

With the outcome of this deliberation of stakeholders on State roads with the Governor; the Honourable Commissioner for Works, Hon. Felix Akhabue, the Works’ Permanent Secretary, Directors, Media Crew and Monitoring Team; on Thursday 22nd January 2026, embarked on an onsite assessment tour, where nine road projects in Edo South were inspected, including the popular Ramat Park Flyover Bridge with its flood control, gully reclamation, construction of surface and underground drains through Obaseki Street to Ikpoba river. The 2.4km project will be ready for public use this May/June as confirmed to the Honourable Commissioner by the project lead of CCECC Engr. Lee.

Other road projects inspected by the Works’ commissioner are; the construction of Benin Technical College road with its adjoining roads and erosion control with underground drainage; construction of Evbuotubu road; construction of 7km Okhunmwun road by the Hartland Civil Engineering Construction; the reconstruction of 12.6km Upper Ekehuan road ( Urhuokhokho to Ugbineh community) by Hartland; construction and erosion control works of the 1.4km Catholic Charismatic Renewal road by Place of Peace Investments Ltd.; the base preparation stages of Adesuwa junction Flyover Bridge on Sapele road by SETRACO ltd; Construction of 10.52km Ekiuwa-Uniben road by Hartland; the 4.2km Palace road by MCC etc.

“Other roads in Edo South are scheduled for onsite inspection at a later date. This same exercise will also extend to Edo Central and North in a couple of days; wherever our roads are being constructed by this administration.” ~ Commissioner Akhabue stated!

His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo is bent on delivering on his electioneering campaign promises, this the Edo people have come to terms with.
