JUST IN: ASUU To Go On Strike, Gives 14-Day Ultimatum To FG Over Unresolved Issues

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to address outstanding issues affecting the university system.

This decision followed a meeting of the union’s National Executive Council held on Sunday at the University of Abuja.

ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, confirmed the development in a signed statement made available to journalists in Abuja.

In the statement, the union criticised what it described as the continued neglect of the university sector and the government’s failure to respond to previous demands.

ASUU stated that if the government fails to act within the 14-day timeframe, the union would initiate a two-week warning strike, which may be followed by a total and indefinite shutdown of academic activities.

A committee was previously established by the Federal Ministry of Education to engage with the union’s proposals. The committee, led by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Abel Enitan, has yet to release any official outcome.

The union’s key demands include the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, the provision of revitalisation funds for universities, payment of outstanding salary arrears, and the establishment of a sustainable funding system for the sector.
