FG, ASUU seal historic deal to end decades of disruptions in Nigerian Universities
In a landmark development poised to reshape Nigeria’s tertiary education landscape, the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have sealed a far-reaching agreement aimed at improving lecturers’ welfare, ensuring industrial harmony and ending decades of disruptions in federal universities.

The agreement includes a 40% increase in the salaries of university academics, effective January 1, 2026, approved by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.
It also introduces a Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) to cover research, publications, conferences, internet access, and other academic necessities.
Apart from the 40 percent increase in salary, allowance has also been increased.
For Professors, the allowance is ₦1.74 million per annum (₦140,000 monthly), and for Readers, ₦840,000 per annum (₦70,000 monthly).
