Lagos Govt Give Mandilas Traders Friday Deadline to Remove Illegal Extension, After Devastating Fire Outbreak
The Lagos State Government has issued a stern directive to traders at Mandilas Plaza, Lagos Island, ordering them to remove all illegal extensions and shops obstructing access routes before Friday evening.
The directive follows the recent massive fire outbreak at the popular plaza, which was reportedly triggered by a generator placed within the complex. The inferno destroyed goods worth millions of naira, with emergency response teams struggling to access the scene due to illegal structures blocking entry points.
In a video obtained by Lagos Reporters, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Gbolahan Oki, addressed the traders, warning that failure to comply with the order would lead to immediate demolition.
“Any trader or shop owner who refuses to remove illegal extensions should be prepared for demolition. There will be no stopping until the illegal structures and obstructions are completely cleared,” Oki declared.
The Mandilas fire incident has reignited debate over poor safety compliance and the need for stricter enforcement of building regulations on Lagos Island’s busy commercial hubs.
